2011年2月22日-26日：オーストラリアへの旅
■今回縁あってオーストラリア南部のジロング近郊に住むジョーンズさんのご家庭を訪問することになりました。我が家の子ども達がホームステイで、お世話になったご家庭です。子ども達の通った学校と、ジョーンズさんの子ども達が通う学校とが姉妹校で、そうした交流が行われているのです。
My wife, Non, and I made our first visit to the Jones family living near Geelong in southern Australia. It was the family that my children had a homestay in high school and were very much taken care of. The school where my children go and the school where The Jones’s children go are sister schools, and such exchanges are taking place.
今回はのんが大学を卒業し社会人となる前に、ぜひ一度両親と一緒にお礼に行きたい、と提案してきました。仕事の関係で長くは休めない私は、当初気が乗らない旅だったのですが、娘がお世話になり、連れ合いによれば娘の精神的な成長に多大の貢献をしてくださったオーストラリアのパパとママにお礼を述べるのは両親として務めに違いない、と決心して出かけました。
Before Non graduated from college and became a member of society, Non suggested that she would like to thank the Jones family with her parents. I didn’t want to go on a trip at first because I couldn’t take a long rest for work. However, I decided to thank her mom and dad in Australia who had made a significant contribution to the spiritual growth of my daughter, and it must have been my duty as parents.
気が進まない一つの理由は英語です。英語で意思の疎通を計るのは難行苦行です。何を言っているのか分からない、何と言っていいのか分からない事ほど、辛いことはありません。専門的な話であれば、特に苦になることはありません。専門用語を並べれば、まぁ、なんとかなるからです。
One reason I don’t like going on a trip is English. Measuring communication in English is a penance. There’s nothing worse than not understanding what the other person is saying and not knowing what to say. If it’s a technical story, you won’t be bothered. This is because communication can be made by arranging technical terms.
しかし日常会話は、そうはいきません。単語自体は易しくとも、それを正確に聞き取るのは至難の業です。ましてや最近は英語とは、ご無沙汰しています。悩んでいても致し方ありません。当たって砕けるしかありません。
But everyday conversations do not. Even if the words themselves are easy, it is extremely difficult to hear them accurately. Even more recently, I haven’t heard English conversation. However, there is no way to worry. They say, ” Go for broke”.
こうして、オーストラリアへの旅がスタートしたのです。

「メルボルンへの道」
To Melbourne
新装なった羽田空港国際線ターミナルです。昨年10月に拓と一緒に上海に出かけた時には、まだ完成しませんでした。三階の買物街では江戸小路と題して江戸情緒がたっぷり楽しめます。
This is the refurbished Haneda Airport International Terminal. When I went to Shanghai with Taku last October, it was not finished yet. In the shopping district on the third floor, you can fully enjoy the Edo atmosphere under the title Edo Koji.

雛人形が展示してありました。のんやあやのために、家の座敷に雛人形を飾ったこともありました。
Hina dolls were on display. For Non and Aya, I used to decorate dolls on the parlor of the house.

香港空港では4時間近く待ち時間がありました。軽く食事をしながら三人で歓談しました。次から次に世界中に旅客機が飛び立っていきます。
At Hong Kong Airport, I waited nearly four hours for a transfer. We chatted together while having a light meal. Many passenger aircraft will fly to the world one after another.
