■今朝は走りました。朝5時に目覚ましを合わせて、すんなりと起きることができました。気温も走るには、ちょうど良い具合で走っていても気持ちの良い朝でした。
今日は生ごみの日でしたので、所定の位置に運び準備運動をした後、走り始めました。しかしここのところ、以前に比べて筋力が落ちたという実感が強くするのです。
今日はいつものコースを走り6.41kmを積み重ね、今月は6回のランで35.05km。残り19日で64.94kmのところまで来ました。月100キロを走る目標からすると、少し足りない状態です。
季節的には、走るには最高の時期ですので、気持ちの良い朝に積み重ねていきたいと思うのですが、どうも疲れが取れきれなくて元気が出ません。とにもかくにも充分休養をとって、朝に備えるしかありません。
■さて新型コロナウイルス感染によって社会生活が大きく揺らいでいます。そんな中で、先日の東京新聞には興味深い記事が掲載されていました。題して、「コスタリカ 感染抑止成功」です。
1949年施行の憲法で軍隊を廃止したことで知られる同国では、中南米の他の国々よりも保健や教育分野に多くの予算を費やしてきたことが、この結果をもたらしたようです。
コスタリカ保健省によると、5月9日時点で感染者は780名、死者は6名。隣国パナマの感染者が8,000人以上死者が200人以上となっているのとは対照的です。同国は社会保障が充実しており、国民の90%以上が医療保険に加入。保険未加入者への感染検査も実施してきました。
コスタリカ大学のルイス・ビジャロボス元医学部長は、こう語っています。
我々の最良のワクチンは、規律正しく教育のある国民と強固な保健制度だ。
軍に投資せず、保健や年金、教育に多くを費やしてきたことが非常に重要だった。
と、語っています。同国が、どのような政治体制を取り、運営されているのか、大変興味深いことです。
小国だからできることだ、と切り捨てるのは簡単ですが、我々に問いかけている問題は、とても大きいのではないでしょうか。
非常事態宣言の発令によって営業自粛に追い込まれ、収入が途絶えたことによって自ら命を絶たなければならない人々が続出しかねない、我が国の状況でありながら、一方ではアメリカでは使い物にならないポンコツ戦闘機を何兆円という単位で購入している政治のあり方は、コスタリカに比べてより賢明な国の運営だとはとても言えないでしょう。
国民の叡智の総和が政治であるとするならば、我々はまだまだ考えなければならない多くの問題を抱えているのです。
I ran this morning. I set my alarm at 5 a.m. and was able to get up without a hitch. The temperature was just right for running, and it was a nice morning for running.
Today was food waste day, so after hauling it into place and doing some prep exercise, I started running. However, these days, I have a strong feeling that my muscle strength has decreased compared to before.
Today I ran my usual course and accumulated 6.41km, and this month I have 6 runs for 35.05km, and with 19 days left I am now at 64.94km. I’m a little short of my goal of running 100 km a month.
Seasonally, it’s a great time to run, so I’d like to build up to a pleasant morning, but I can’t seem to get tired enough to feel energized. In any case, I have no choice but to get enough rest and be ready in the morning.
Now, social life has been greatly shaken by the new coronavirus infection. In this context, there was an interesting article in the Tokyo Shimbun the other day. It’s titled, “Costa Rica: Successful Infection Deterrence”.
This seems to have resulted from the fact that the country, known for abolishing the military in its 1949 constitution, has spent more on health and education than any other country in Latin America.
As of May 9, 780 people had been infected and six had died, according to the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. This is in stark contrast to neighboring Panama, where more than 8,000 people have been infected and more than 200 have died. The country has a good social security system, and more than 90% of its citizens are covered by medical insurance. The state has also carried out infection tests on the uninsured.
Luis Villalobos, former medical director of the University of Costa Rica, said.
Our best vaccine is a disciplined and educated public and a strong health system.
It was very important that we did not invest in the military and spent a lot on health, pensions and education.
It’s very interesting to see how the country’s political system works and how it operates.
It’s easy to dismiss Costa Rica as a small country that can do this, but I think the question we’re asking ourselves is a very big one.
I don’t think it’s any more wise to run a country than Costa Rica when we have a state of emergency that is forcing us to suspend business and causing people to take their own lives due to the loss of income, and at the same time, we have a government that is buying trillions of dollars of US useless, clunker fighter jets.
If the sum total of the wisdom of the people is politics, then we still have a lot of problems to think about.
